The second World Missions Summit, held at Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, is history, but its influence will continue. More than 845 young adults filled out cards committing to “give a year and pray about a lifetime” of missionary service. Seven young couples responded to the call, and eight people visited AGWM’s Personnel and Family Life exhibit to complete an application for short-term missions before they left the Summit.
Missionaries used ministry from God’s Word, music, visual and media presentations, individual conversations, and group interaction to clearly present the need to win the lost for Christ. After attending a “Window to the World” session highlighting Europe, a student said, “I had no idea that only 3 percent of Europe’s population claim to be Christians.”
Many participants were moved by cultural experiences focusing on various areas of the world. After a presentation on Northern Asia, a young woman said, “I now understand how a girl in that culture feels when she accepts Christ and how frightened she is to tell her parents.”
The final Summit service began at 8 p.m. Thursday, January 1. When a pastor from a closed country in the Middle East gave the final altar call for a commitment to become warriors for Christ, nearly everyone stood. At 11 p.m., several thousand young adults were still standing with hands raised in praise or kneeling in prayer.
“I’ve attended church all my life,” one student said. “but this was different. I’ve been changed.”
